Share 2 books and 1 skill/hobby in Comments section here. From Mike Lohre

Students, let's share the 2 books we most want to read with the rest of the class and one specific skill or hobby you'd like to pursue or learn.  Briefly describe who wrote each book and what its main theme or subject is.

The truth is that we are often inspired by our peers more than anyone else.  Let's share our ideas here in the Comments section to this post so we have all our ideas in one place and can reference each others ideas.

  2. 2 books I would like to read:
    1. Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion: The protagonist of Play It as It Lays, Maria Wyeth, resides in a neuropsychiatric hospital. As the story unfolds we, the readers, get a glimpse of what her life was like before she got there.

    2. Beloved by Toni Morrson: The book concerns the story of Sethe and her daughter Denver after their escape from slavery. Their home in Cincinnati is haunted by a revenant, whom they believe to be the ghost of Sethe's daughter.

A skill that I would like to endure would be to eat healthier and workout more.

  3. 1) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Theme: to see whether people are essentially good or essentially evil.

    2) The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald. Theme: social stratification.

I'd like to learn better studying skills and not to procrastinate.

  4. A book that I would like to read is any book in the Game of Throne series, by George R.R Martin. This is an epic on HBO about people fighting for the throne. Another book I would be interested in reading is Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn. This movie just came out, and it looks really interesting, so I think it would be cool to read the book. One skill that I think would be cool to learn is playing the bass guitar. I like learning new instruments, and think it would be cool learning this one.

  5. I would like to read Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling. It is separate from her Harry Potter series. It has a lot of themes about social class and politics.

Another book I would like to read is The Maze Runner series by James Dashner. After seeing the movie it is thriller.

I would like to get more into filming. I film a lot of my dad uncle and I snowboarding, making a short video at the end of the season. But we got a better editing system and I'm about to buy the new GoPro hero 4 black.

  6. Two books that I would like to read is "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck because I read it in high school and it was probably one of my favorites but I want to read it again to pick up on the little things I missed. Its about two friends who move place to place trying to find work during the Great Depression. Another book I would like to read is "1984" by George Orwell because I've heard it is a classic. Its about a future war in the year 1984 since it was written in 1949. A skill I would like to improve on is to become a better reader/ read more often.

  7. Two books I would like to read are "The Cuckcoo's Calling" and "The Silkworm" both by the author of Robert Galbraith. These books are a crime based mystery novels about a private investigator and how he goes about solving these interesting cases.
Robert Galbraith, also known as J.K. Rowling, is a well-known writer that has writen many different novels, most famous novel being the Harry Potter series.
One skill I would like to pursue is an old hobby of mine, music. I want to get back into playing the guitar and piano like I used too, and gain more skill with both instruments.

  8. I would like to read Don't Put Me In Coach by Mark Titus. This is the journey of an irrelevant college basketball player for The Ohio State University. It is his story from bench warming to running one of the most popular blogs.

Another book that I would like to read is The Outsiders. I have seen the movie and I liked it a lot.

I would like to learn how to be more of an active reader.

  9. One of the two books that I would want to read with the rest of the class is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This book is about young kids who compete for their lives. The second book that I would like to read is The Blind Side by Michael Lewis which is about a young homeless kid who is adopted by a family and ends up becoming an NFL player. I am hoping to become a faster reader as my skill because I am a slow reader.

  10. One book(s) that I would like to read is the rest of the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. I am half way with the second book and want to read the third. The main theme of this series is political, and social turmoil and how citizens are dealing with the new government overthrow in a thrilling and action-like view.

Another book I want to read is the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald because I loved the movie and the book is a classic. The theme of this book is about thwarted love between a man and a woman.

One skill I would like to improve on is being a more active reader because we do this almost every week for class and is something I will have to do throughout the rest of my life.

  11. I would like to read The Pearl by John Steinbeck, it is about a poor family who lives in a small beachside shack. One of there children falls ill and is turned away from the doctor because they do not have the money to pay the bill. In hopes of earning money so that their child can recieve medical treatment they as a family go out and go diving for pearls. There discovery of something unseen then turns into a power struggle over who gets to keep it and how it later on dictates their life.
Another book I would like to read would be the Great Gatsby I was intrigued by the movie and would love to get to know the plot and the characters in a more intimate way, also there is a lot of symbolism that goes untold in the movie and I would like to look deeper into that.
One skill or hobby I would like to pursue would be photography. I think it is something that goes unnotice and we take for granted of having the technique to actually capture a moment and freeze time in a way, just by taking a photo. A picture really can be worth a thousands words if you capture the right moment.

  12. 1. One book i would like to read is Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. Theme: Survival
    2. One big goal over a long period of time is to read the entire Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Theme: Family, Sorcery

One goal i would like to set for myself is to study much more, do all my readings and to stop procrastinating because i know there will come a point in college where it will not fly.

  13. 1.) The first book i would like to read is Killing Patton which is a book about a WWII general who dies a mysterious death after the war and the events leading up to his death which may not have been an accident
2.)The second book i would like to read is called This Is a Book which is a collection of short stories by comedian Demetri Martin.
One goal i would like to set for myself is learn how to play an instrument (guitar maybe)

  14. Two books that I would like to read would be:
    1. The Grapes of Wrath- The themes are family, lies, and deceit
    2. East of Eden-The themes are love, the struggle of acceptance, and greatness
Both of these books are written by John Steinbeck
One goal I would like to set for myself would be to try to not procrastinate.

  15. One book i would like to read with class would be The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book is regarded as a book you must read before you die. It is about a young boy in Afghanistan who betrays the trust of his best friend and goes through an unbelievable journey.
Another book i would like to read would be The grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is an awesome writer. The book has to do with lies and betrayal within a family.
A skill i would love to have is to be able to read faster. I generally always comprehend what i'm reading, i just read really slow.

  16. I would like to read the Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin which is about Kings and Queens fighting over power.
I would also like to read The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien which many of you know is about hobbits, orcs, elves, etc. in a fight for power over the ring

A goal that I would like to try and work on would be reading more on my own time. I don't really read unless I am reading for a class

  17. I really enjoy reading so there are many books that I hope to read this year. The Girl with the Dragon tattoo really caught my attention and I have been told by a lot of people that it as an amazing and exciting book. Another book that I hope to read this year is the Pillars of the Earth. This book is a historical novel that's about cathedral building and has been recommended to me by me previous English teacher.

A skill that I wish to pick us is to become a more detailed and elaborate writer.
